Histopathological Study on the Mucous Membrane of the Maxillary Sinus and Nasal Turbinates in Chronic Paranasal Sinusitis

Abstract
The mucous membrane of the maxillary sinus and inferior and middle nasal turbinates were observed histopathologically in thirty cases. The subjects were received Caldwell-Luc¢¥s operation during the period from July through October 1971, in National Medical Center.
The results were as follows:
1) In edematous type of the chronic maxillary sinusitis, the mucous membrane of the inferior turbinate showed mostly edematous changes (66.6%), and in fibrous type fibrous changes (71.4%) were noted.
2) The changes of the middle turbinate were similar to that of the inferior turbinate.
3) The edematous changes of the mucous membrane were seen more frequently in the sinus membrane (60.0%) than in the turbinal membrane (inf.46.7%;mid. 43.3%).
4) The early edmatous change of the mucous membrane of maxillary sinus in chronic paranasal sinusitis seemed to be developed to infiltrative and fibrous change, as the duration of the disease getting longer.
5) Accumulation of pus or muco-purulent discharge (88.8%) in the sinus cavity were found more frequently in the cases of edematous changes of the sinus mucous membrane, and mucoid (80.0%) in that of infiltrative changes.
6) It seems that the changes of the mucous membrane of the sinus have some relation to pneumatization of the sinus, that was the mucous membrane of the sinus revealed mostly edematous changes (76.9%) in pneumatic type-and fibrous changes (57.1%) in that of the sclerotic type.
7) No specific relationships were found among the following things: cell infiltration, mucus gland, vascular changes of the mucous membrane of the sinus, turbinates and the types of the mucous membrane.
